Hey All,

Now that Jake has already come out to support the first UGH forum, how's about the UGH members go out and support him too.  He is having the first Jake Shimabukuro Ukulele Symposium on Saturday, March 23 at Kaimuki HS.  There are various classes being offered and a reception/concert at 6:00PM.  If you take one of the classes, the reception/concert is included.  Else I think there is a small fee, but, will have pupus and then the concert after.  Anyways, if you're interested, check out www.jakeshimabukuro.com and you can download the application.

Laters,
gh

Glad to hear it ukeman.  I'm registered for that class too.  So see ya there.

Will be getting some tickets for the March 23, evening concert from Kaz (Jake's manager) to sell at the March 9, UGH general membership meeting.  Think they run about $8, so for all you that will be at the general membership meeting, bring your $8 or more for your friends/family.  This will be a reception/concert so for your $8 you'll get a pupu reception plus the concert.  So don't miss it.

Once again, mark your calendars.  It's on March 23 @ 6:00pm at Kaimuki HS.  Don't miss it!!!

Also, if you sign up for one of the classes, the reception/concert is included, so do one better and sign up for one of the classes.
Later,
gh

na mele hawaii  was another winnah.....mahalos to Byron Yasui for organizing this event...went hand in hand with the Art Academy renovation of their theatre so the Uke boys broke in the newly renovated facilities. The event was led off by Benny Chong and his unreal jazz stylings..followed by Byron who also played jazzy oldies, ethereal japanese melodies...i mean koto or shamisen on an ukulele? amazin....Byron also played old standard jazz numbers....After intermission   Gordon Mark led off with his classical and romantic stylings with his Rachmaninoff on ukulele and sweet Hawaiian renditions ala Gordon Mark.....this guy is smoother than peanut butter. The nite capped off with Jumpin Jake and his infectious ukulele wizzardry...There is no describing Jake you gots to be there to take it all in....his pauses are simply dramatic...and he hasnt even picked nor strummed a note. But when he does.......oh wow....the sounds are simply amazing. In a nutshell with four righteous guys it was an amazing nite.....their CD is out so buy one when you get the chance....    ukeman

Hey,

Found this link to the WCC site which talks about the ukulele workshops and gives registration information.  Sign up early and get a discount.  Looks like you can sign up for both days for a cheaper price or for just one day.   Unfortunately, the Saturday session conflicts with the UGH's binding workshop.  :(  Hopefully the guild will postpone the binding workshop scheduled for 7/13 so we can go to both days and not miss the workshop. HINT!!!  HINT!!!!  ;)  Anyways, take a look.

Much Mahalos to the Wokman Rudy and Nate for hosting the 1st UGH Windward regional meeting.   :)  As always with the UGH events, the grinds was ono and got to meet a bunch more of the UGH members more up and close.  The jig sharing idea was a winner and got a few more ideas for some of my own.

Mucho mahalos,

Awesome Fun and Great Jig ideas!   ;D
We had a terriffic turn out...Some of the attendees were so excited about the jigs shared they went right home and made their own that night.  The food was just fabulous...Brahda Nate (Guitar Smith) busted out his private stock of home brew beer...wicked smooth!  The best part of the day was just hanging, talking story and sharing ideas and experiences.  West side boyz also came over and had a great time...Vince showed off his unreal mold that was not only functional but beautiful.  To top it off, we all made some new friends and got closer to the old ones.

Nate will be developing some pictures of the day so maybe we can get the Webmaster to post later!

Aloha,  Wokman  8)

Wow!
I just got back from Kona, I got to attend the West Hawaii Sound Forum. The instruments were awesome... The jam session with Kimo, Gaylord, Koekoa, and David at the end of the event was worth the trip. To Andy Berard, great job... We look foward to West Hawaii's support at the exhibition. Again on behalf of Vince, Kimo and myself thanks for the aloha shown to us. The instruments were truly awesome. Look for pictures in our next newsletter.

aloha  people.....mahalos to Miki Browne for her fabulous binding machine. Those of you at the binding seminar got to see Miki's setup in action..the jig can be purchased completely setup at the Luthiers Mercantile or plans are avaiable for you to build your own...I   have a set at the shop too!    The router bits are indeed costly..but a necessary tool for binding. The bit and bearing setup via Stu- Mac is cheaper...while the Setup via Luthiers Mercantile is almost twice the cost..their winged bit is more versatile ..allows for  higher bindings.

If you were there you saw me with the trusty lam  trimmer...does the same job but via your guidance. There are other ways to bind using table router systems or router setups with the router cutting horizontally too.....try em and come up with your own method...Binding is always nail biting time...but more often than not all comes out well in the end. Using the hand held router  is cheaper on router bit costs since youre using any straight fluted bit versus a special winged cutter...but its best to try both ways and pick the method you like....aloha     ukeman

Aloha all! Just a blast via our horn blowin exercise:

Love to report that the 'Ukulele Guild of Hawaii has just been selected for an award at the Keep It Hawaii 2004, 13th Annual Awards put on by the Hawaii Tourist Authority and the Hawaii Visitors Bureau.
UGH entered in the very competitive "Events" category and supah member Sam Au put together a beautiful presentation, along with a power point supplement, showcasing our past Second Annual 'Ukulele Exhibition and Conference that was held last November at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Hotel.

Sam and I were present at the Luncheon and were excited as the guild's name was announced as recipients of the prestigous Kahili Award, gee our UGH poster flashed on the Jumbo screen and Sam stood up and proudly accepted the award on UGH's behalf.

Mahalo Sam for your efforts.....no forget join the 'Ukulele Guild of Hawaii..its a good organization that shares uke info to all members! Membership is 35.00 per year, the monthly newsletter is worth the application fee. Send check to :

aloha all!

The Third Annual 'Ukulele Exhibition and Conference is now officially over. This years event topped the previous two years (keeping in mind last years event was a Kahili Award Winner).

Member guest night on Friday the 19th was awesome:
entertainment through dinner via Creighton Ho and Franklin Chang....uke soloists and truly gifted musicians. This was followed by Bryan Tolentino and the Side Order Band with bruddah Bryan on uke, Hoku Zuttermeister on Bass and Asa Young on guitar....a guest
appearance by Aunty Genoa Keawe was a show stopper! The entertainment followed with Jim and Liz Beloff doing duets and then introducing the likes of Lyle Ritz, Ohtasan and John King...awesome. The artist soloed for a few numbers and joined in a hana hou jam!

Saturdays event featured all kine seminars on building, uke theory, playing styles and strummin with presenters the likes of Doctor Byron Yasui, Hiram Bell, Jim Beloff, Lyle Ritz, Benny Chong, kimo Hussey, Terry Brown ,Sam Au, Bryan Tolentino , Gordon Mark and Canadian James Hill. For the builders we had seminars with Mike daSilva,
Nathan Ching, Chad Linsay, Norman Takeya and myself Mike Chjock aka ukeman. This went on simultaneously in 3 seminar rooms from 9am to 5pm.  unreal!

Saturday Night we hosted a concert with:
Karen Keawehawii as emcee and openning with Bryan Tolentino and the Side Order Band and another magic guest appearance by Aunty Genoa Keawe....followed by John King, Doctor Byron Yasui, Lyle Ritz, James Hill and Benny Chong. The evening closed with an onstage jam session!

The exhibition featured 25 to 30 custom ukes with 15 vendor tables and a whole lot of kanikapila and good times! If ya wasn't there yu missed an unreal event and best ready yourself for next year.......laters  ukeman
