Title: A ? about the Hilo Strings?
Post by Bud on Sep 29th, 2006 at 1:49pm
Ukeman,

I was wondering what the difference was between the regular Hilo strings and the Hilo High tension?

It might be obvious but Im not going to take anything for granted..  ;).... as in the High tension are stronger? or maybe they last longer?
Could you please explain what the difference is?
Thanks,

Bud

Aloha Bud....suggest you reach Bob Gleason over at Pegasus 'Ukuleles and Guitars over in the Kurtistown area of Hilo..he is the distributor of Hilo Strings and I am sure he can answer your questions and mayhaps give you the pound tensioning of these different sets!

The High Tension sets are Hilo string's response to the Aquila phenomenon.  When the Aquila's came out, they became very popular right away because of the noticeable change in volume....they are loud strings!

The main reason for the extra volume is a slightly higher tension in the string set.  A set of 4 Aquila tenor all nylgut strings will pull about 53 pounds of tension while tuned.  The normal Hilo sets will pull about 46 pounds of tension while tuned.  This is actually a pretty big difference.

So, the extra tension will give you a louder volume.  However you have to remember that they will feel stiffer to play with...you might want to lower the action.  This is all up to the player's style/preference.

The other two string factors are Material and Diameter.  These will have more to do with strength and durability.  Ukeman, Mike Chock has done extensive testing with all sorts of sets.  We will put that information together in someway soon.

Note - higher tension can be nice for slack string tunings...  Not as loose with same lowered tuning.  Love Aquila.  Hilo nice too!  Higher tension can be rough on beginner fingers, though, if action is high.  I use three semi-tones lower on all strings with Aquilas without problems with slop.  Haven't tried it with others.  Provides more of a guitar-like sound, and a little quieter, which isn't bad for practice.  Easier on fingers too...
