Title: I dont understand the rule of 17.817
Post by Acabooe on Apr 4th, 2008 at 3:17am
I am almost ready to start working on my fret board ( as soon as I decide what I am going to use for one :P ).
The problem I am having is that I don't understand how the rule of 17.817 works.

Is it that you devide the total scale by 17.817, and that gives you the first distance?

If that is the truth, then 17 inches devided by 17.817 equals 0.95414491777515855643486557781894...
and I have no idea what to do with that number.

Is there a way to convert that number into, o, say 64ths of an inch? Or would that make the fret be off?

If anyone could help, I would really appreciate it.

Bob:

There are tons of scale length calculators available to do the calculation for you (Asa gave a few in a recent posting), but so you can do it yourself here's how it works:

The number you calculated is the distance to the first fret.  So to get the distance to the 2nd fret subtract the distance to the first fret from the scale length (17 - 0.9514... = 16.0485...) then divide the distance from the first fret to the saddle by 17.817 and add this distance to the 0.9514 to get the distance from the nut to the 2nd fret.  Repeat this calculation for each fret until you get to the last fret you will install.

To convert to 64ths of an inch, multiply the decimal portion of each number by 64 and round off.  If you can split 64ths on your ruler you have better eyes than I have.

Once you have gone through the calculations, check you results with one of the previously mentioned programs.

Bob,
If you go to this link they have a cool way to figure your fret spacing.

http://www.stewmac.com/FretCalculator/

Just type in the number of frets and the scale lenght.
