Compensate according to plan or book?
Jun 16th, 2007 at 2:41pm

I am building a tenor uke and have the slanted bridge from Hanalima.  The plan shows 17" to center of saddle at center of bridge for the slanted saddle.  The book shows a straight saddle and says compensation is 17 3/32 to the front of the saddle slot in the center of the bridge.  What should be the measurement be for my slanted saddle? I am installing the Aquila strings with low G.

Please read page 98 in your manual - "A Little String Theory".

The scale length for the tenor is 17" inches from the front edge of the nut to the front edge of the saddle.  Page 98 explains how and why you might compensate for string stretch.  Page 110 explains how to fine-tune your scale length with the crown of the saddle.

These are advanced techniques for the left-brained luthier.
