8 String Bracing
Nov 15th, 2010 at 5:22am
I've completed two tenor ukuleles and am in the middle of building a third using the Hana Lima 'Ia construction manual and tenor fan braced plans.  A friend recently asked me to build him an 8 string tenor uke.  What should I do differently to the bracing for an 8 string?  The body will be all koa with red spruce bracing.

You are doubling the force of string tension by going to eight strings.
My guess is a thicker top and possibly a thicker bridge-patch would do the job but Asa would know for sure.

Sorry, I don't know for sure...I never made a 8 string instrument.

Bob is right about the doubled tension and the need to compensate, but I don't have any exact numbers.
