Happy New Year everyone,

I was wondering if the shop will be making any ebony fingerboards available.

Thanks,
Lefty

Hi Lefty,  Happy new year to you too.  Sorry about the ebony, but I do not have any supply.

Hi Lefty,

It's not just that I am out of stock, what I mean is that I don't know where to buy any ebony.

African ebony has been getting scarce for a few years.  I've heard plenty of warnings that there is limited supply but have always been able to get some.

This time my supplier who imports directly from Africa wouldn't take my order.  Gibson had recently cleaned them out with an emergency order because they are also having supply problems.

So that is the word on the street.  You can still get ebony blanks out there, but be ready for higher prices as supplies get even thinner.

I will be looking into Wenge or Macassar ebony as alternatives.

Hi Asa,

I was at a woodworking expo in Sydney last year and saw a rep selling fretboard blanks of this Pacific Blackwood (Queen Ebony). It is imported from the Solomon Islands, has a density of about 1200 kg/m3, and you can get some pretty dark pieces of it.

I haven't used any of it, but it did look the goods. Could be worth experimenting with.

Oh that is interesting, thank you for the heads up sweetgum.  Some articles to check out:

http://www.newser.com/story/127424/the-gibson-guitar-raid-controversy.html

This one has video:

I guess this is inevitable as supplies get thinner and the prices get higher.
